Globopuertos on the Tulancingo highway and the pyramids

Both companies launch from their own globopuertos on the road to Tulancingo. Sky Balloons uses Km 28 of the México-Tulancingo highway, and Volare uses Km 27.5 of the Carretera libre a Tulancingo in San Juan Teotihuacán. Sky Balloons says its flights cross the archaeological zone, passing the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Avenue of the Dead. It flies them at more than 500 m but never above 800 m.

That 800 m ceiling comes from Base Aérea Militar No. 1 at Santa Lucía, according to Sky Balloons. Volare points out that pilots cannot steer and instead use winds at different heights, so the balloon lands away from where it took off and the ground crew follows by road. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, lies about 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Mexico City, and its Pyramid of the Sun stands 65 m tall.

Coffee at 6 am, aloft by 7 am

Volare publishes its whole morning. Guests arrive at the globopuerto at 6:00 am for check-in and coffee, board at 6:30 and fly from about 6:45 to 7:20 am. After the ride back come breakfast, a certificate and a toast, finishing by 8:50 am. When the first shift fills, a second goes up 1 to 1.5 hours later, and time aloft runs 30 to 50 minutes depending on the weather.

Sky Balloons' shared shuttle leaves the Ángel de la Independencia monument in Mexico City between about 4:50 and 5:30 am and returns around 10:00 am. Its product page sets check-in at 5:45 am. Guests get a welcome coffee, then a toast with Freixenet rosé cava, a personalized flight diploma and breakfast at its Restaurante El Cielo. Its crew follows the balloon and drives passengers back, and photos and video are on sale afterwards.

Fog, rain and the 20 km/h wind limit

Sky Balloons flies any day of the year and claims more than 350 days of good weather. Its terms name the conditions that cancel a flight: heavy fog, prolonged rain or wind above 20 km/h. A weather cancellation is rebooked free, but the new date covers only the flight, not the transport or breakfast. Its pilots may also bring a balloon down early if conditions change in the air.

Volare prices some Tuesday and Wednesday shared flights lower, depending on availability and season. San Martín de las Pirámides held its first balloon festival from May 29 to 31, 2026, with free entry, the State of Mexico symphony orchestra and Puebla as guest state. Its mayor said the event had come to stay. More than 25 companies run balloon tours in the area, Posta reported.

MXN 2,900 shared seats and the permit check

Sky Balloons México and Volare price a shared seat almost the same. Sky Balloons charges MXN 2,899 per adult and MXN 1,990 for ages 4 to 12, and Volare MXN 2,900 and MXN 2,500 for ages 5 to 12. Both include breakfast, a toast and a certificate. Volare adds MXN 500 per person for round-trip transport from hotels in Mexico City's tourist areas, but not from private homes or Airbnbs.

Volare's standard fare covers passengers up to 110 kg, charges extra above that and stops at 150 kg, while Sky Balloons' flight pages list no per-passenger weight limit. Private balloons cost MXN 4,500 per person with Sky Balloons, MXN 8,500 for a couple with Volare, or MXN 3,600 each in Volare's family balloon for 3 to 12. Volare treats official ID as the boarding pass, and Sky Balloons charges the full fare for cancellations under 72 hours.

Check permits before booking. AFAC, Mexico's civil aviation agency, requires each operator to hold its permit, keep valid passenger insurance and use licensed crews. N+ reported that some companies near the zone work outside the legal framework. After a balloon caught fire and fell on April 1, 2023, killing two people, AFAC investigated the operator's status and insurance. TV Azteca reported in June 2025 that state and municipal authorities had closed nine companies for irregularities.

Before you book

  • Ask to see the paperwork. N+ lists what a balloon company should be able to show: registration and airworthiness certificates, valid insurance, its scenic flight permit and the pilot's commercial licence.
  • Bring official ID. Volare uses it as your boarding pass and will not let you fly without it, though a digital ID is accepted.
  • Leave warm layers in Sky Balloons' lockers before boarding, and wear light clothes, sunglasses and a cap, since the burners give off heat.
  • Visiting the pyramids after the flight costs MXN 210 (half for Mexican nationals and residents). The zone opens 8 am to 5 pm, with last entry at 4:30 pm, and bans drones, bags and backpacks.
  • Getting there. The archaeological zone is about 45 km from Mexico City, roughly an hour by car or bus on the Ecatepec-Pirámides highway, with buses from the Central del Norte terminal.
