Neither company launches from a fixed field. Bob's Balloons meets near the ChampionsGate Shopping Center and sends the exact spot in the confirmation email. It says it can choose from hundreds of launch and landing spots across Central Florida, depending on wind direction and where passengers would like to go. AirHound Adventures meets at 45590 US-27 in Davenport. From there the crew drives 15 to 20 minutes to the day's launch field. ChampionsGate lies in Four Corners, 25 miles southwest of Orlando, where Lake, Orange, Osceola and Polk counties meet.
Routes change daily with the wind. AirHound lists Orlando, Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista, Celebration, Kissimmee, Four Corners and Davenport among the possible views, and its flights average about 7 miles at heights from the treetops to 3,000 feet. Bob's flies from treetop level to about 1,000 feet. Its low passes often turn up deer and other wildlife, and from the top it points to Disney, Epcot, Kissimmee, the Orlando skyline and many lakes.
AirHound Adventures flies once a day, just after sunrise, and plans on 3 hours 30 minutes in all. That covers a 15 to 20 minute drive to the field, 20 to 30 minutes of setup, 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes aloft, 25 minutes of packing and a 20 minute drive back. Passengers may be asked to help set up or pack up. Afterward comes champagne or sparkling cider with light gourmet snacks, and each flight includes a timelapse video.
Bob's Balloons plans about three hours, including a setup and inflation that passengers can watch, with about an hour for the launch and flight. A chase crew in radio and cell contact with the pilot follows the whole way, packs the balloon into the chase vehicle after landing and returns everyone to the starting point. The flight ends with a complimentary champagne and orange juice toast, which Bob's calls a 200-year-old tradition.
Flights run year-round, and AirHound Adventures splits the calendar in two. From April 1 to September 30, its primary season, the calendar opens far in advance because spring and summer bring Florida's most reliable flying weather. From October 1 to March 31 it calls forecasts unpredictable beyond a few days, so seats go first to a waitlist once good weather is confirmed 1 to 2 days out. The rest post to its public calendar 24 to 48 hours ahead, with updates at 10 am, 2 pm and 6 pm.
The National Weather Service office in Melbourne dates the wet season from about the third or fourth week of May until mid-October. Orlando's median dry-season start is October 15, and June through September are the wettest months. On summer afternoons, clouds build and the Gulf and Atlantic sea breezes collide, often setting off storms with frequent lightning. The agency notes that the inland stretch between Tampa and Cape Canaveral is often called the "Lightning Capital of the United States."
Every flight here goes at sunrise. AirHound says thermals make afternoon winds shift too quickly for safe flying. It launches only with winds under 6 mph, no rain, no storms approaching within 75 miles and at least 3 miles of visibility. Bob's Balloons stays down in high wind or unstable weather and reschedules at the passenger's convenience, as space allows. AirHound calls to rebook weather cancellations as many times as a safe flight takes.
Bob's Balloons charges $325 per passenger and $1,400 for a private flight for two, and owner Bob Wilamoski recommends passengers be 5 or older. All bookings are made in advance with a credit card guarantee, and cancelling takes 48 hours' notice so the seats can be refilled. Bob's says Wilamoski has flown for more than 20 years without an incident and that its pilots hold FAA commercial lighter-than-air ratings. It does not publish basket sizes or weight limits.
AirHound Adventures charges $425 per guest in a shared basket of up to 5, or $1,700 for a private basket of up to 4, and says its prices include all fees and taxes. Its five balloons range from 54,000 to 118,000 cubic feet, and groups of up to 16 can fly across several balloons with notice. There is no fixed minimum age; it suggests 5 or 6, and children cannot be lifted to see over basket sides that stand 40 to 52 inches. Anyone over 350 lb must call before booking.
AirHound lets passengers reschedule free or take a full refund with at least 48 hours' notice; inside 48 hours the full price is owed. Arriving more than 10 minutes late counts as a no-show, and arriving too afraid to fly is treated as a late cancellation. Once passengers board, even before the basket lifts, no refund applies. Every passenger signs a waiver and declares an accurate weight beforehand. Its year-round Romantic Package takes place on a private estate with a static and tethered balloon, photography and a picnic.
