Fairy chimneys around Göreme, Uçhisar and Ortahisar
Most flights cross the valleys around Göreme, a town inside Göreme National Park, which UNESCO listed in 1985 together with the rock sites of Cappadocia. The fairy chimneys below formed from soft volcanic deposits laid down when Mount Erciyes, Mount Hasan and Göllüdağ erupted, roughly nine to three million years ago, then cut by wind and water. Harder layers survive as the rock outcrops of Uçhisar and Ortahisar, on a plateau above 1,000 m (3,300 ft).
No company publishes a fixed launch field. Voyager Balloons says it uses about 18 launch and landing sites and shapes each flight around that morning's wind, from ground level to roughly 3,000 ft above it, with a 6,000 ft ceiling. Anatolian Balloons says a flight covers 2 to 15 miles. Royal Balloon says its pilots avoid livestock and planted fields under agreements with landowners, and that nobody knows the landing spot before take-off.
Pickups before dawn and two morning waves
Voyager Balloons collects guests about 90 minutes before sunrise, depending on the hotel, and Anatolian Balloons about an hour before. Anatolian moves passengers to the take-off site only after the civil aviation authority grants permission. Voyager says the authority allows two morning flights, one leaving just before sunrise and one after it. Royal Balloon breaks its 3 to 4 hours down as 30 minutes on the road each way, 30 minutes of inflation, 60 to 90 minutes aloft and 30 minutes of ceremony.
Voyager serves breakfast in its own restaurant before take-off and champagne with snacks after landing, while its chase crew tracks the balloon by radio, packs it up and drives guests back. Anatolian hands out a breakfast box of croissants and juice, toasts with non-alcoholic champagne and presents a personalized certificate. Royal Balloon serves a light breakfast at its Göreme headquarters, pours Kavaklıdere sparkling wine and gives each passenger a commemorative gold medal. Skyway adds a medal only on its private flight.
Wind, winter rain and February's 8 flying days
Each morning the Turkish civil aviation office in Cappadocia decides whether the weather is within limits, and its answer covers every company, so all balloons stay down together on a no-go day. SHGM counted 90 flying days in the first half of 2026, Anadolu Agency reported. By month that was 9 in January, 8 in February, 13 in March, 18 in April, 17 in May and 25 in June. TÜRSAB blamed heavy rain and wind, and noted that 2025 had 223 flying days.
Royal Balloon counts about 260 flyable days a year, and Turkey's transport minister put Cappadocia's average at up to 280 in a 2024 statement reported by Hürriyet Daily News. Royal says cooler weather improves lift and flies all year, but winter mornings call for thermal underwear and two pairs of socks. The Culture and Tourism Ministry's Cappadocia Balloon Festival brought 30 special-shaped balloons from 10 countries for its seventh edition, July 30 to August 2, 2026.
From 28-seat Classic baskets to private balloons
Basket size sets most of the price. Skyway Balloons listed its Classic flight, about 28 people for 45 minutes to an hour, at EUR 200 for late-October 2026 dates. Its Comfort (about 20 people, 60 minutes) was EUR 380 and its Platinum (about 14, 75 minutes) EUR 450. Voyager Balloons charges EUR 260 for a Standard seat in a 20-person basket split into four compartments, and EUR 330 for Comfort, with 16. Those April 1 to November 1 prices fall to EUR 160 and EUR 180 before April.
Royal Balloon publishes no rates but sells three shared tiers, each with an hour aloft: Queen with 20 to 24 per basket, Queen Plus with at most 16 and King with 8 to 12. Voyager's Exclusive Flight seats up to four in a Vista basket for at least 1.5 hours, with breakfast served in the air, and Skyway's homepage priced its private balloon at EUR 7,250. Türkiye Balloons flies private groups of 5 to 10 in a smaller balloon.
Royal and Voyager refuse children under 6, Voyager also requires a height of 4 ft 6 in, and Anatolian prefers not to carry under-6s. Refund rules vary more. Anatolian refunds in full 48 hours or more ahead, Türkiye Balloons 5 or more days ahead and Skyway 7 or more days ahead (50% at 3 to 6 days). Voyager charges nothing beyond a week out, keeps the deposit inside a week and the full price inside 48 hours. All four refund or rebook weather cancellations.
Before you book
- Book before you arrive and fly on your first morning. Voyager says seats are limited by civil aviation rules, and guests whose flight is cancelled for weather get priority on the next morning, subject to space.
- Wear layers and flat-soled shoes rather than one heavy coat. Royal Balloon suggests thermal underwear and two pairs of socks in winter, and a hat for tall passengers because of the burner heat.
- Bring a soft camera case. Royal Balloon allows cameras but asks passengers to stow them for the landing.
- Voyager needs children to be at least 6 and 4 ft 6 in tall, so they can see over the basket and take the landing position. Under-16s must fly with an adult aged 18 or over.
- Getting there. Göreme is served by two airports, Nevşehir Kapadokya and Kayseri, and by long-distance buses from across Turkey.
