Chenonceau, Amboise and Chaumont-sur-Loire launch fields
Amboise sits on the Loire 27 km (17 mi) east of Tours, and Chenonceau is about 18 km (11 mi) from it. Three of the four operators name one or both as their flying area. Art Montgolfières launches close to a château at Chenonceaux, Amboise, Chaumont-sur-Loire or Loches, and its pilot fixes the exact field only after a last wind test in the car park. The Amboise tourist office lists France Montgolfières' flight as crossing Chenonceau and its surroundings, with departures from Chenonceaux or Amboise.
Balloon Revolution gathers passengers at 2 allée des Mariniers on the Ile d'Or in Amboise, in front of the campsite reception. Its private VIP flight can lift off from the garden of a partner château near Amboise, Chenonceau or Chaumont-sur-Loire when the weather allows, and the company describes routes over the Loire, Cher and Indre valleys. Aérocom is based at Les Montils, near Blois, and its pilot chooses the take-off field by wind direction and speed, and can still move it.
Over Amboise, the château stands above the town, and Clos Lucé, the manor where Leonardo da Vinci lived and died, is 500 m (1,640 ft) from it. Art Montgolfières points out that Chenonceau can be enjoyed from the air as well as from the ground. Which château passes below depends on the wind, since the field is settled on the day.
France Montgolfières takes off about an hour after sunrise or two hours before sunset. It texts the meeting time and place the day before, and the field is usually within half an hour of the meeting point. Aérocom flies at dawn or about three hours before sunset and confirms by SMS on the day. Art Montgolfières asks passengers to phone from 3 pm the day before to check the flight is on. All four quote about an hour in the air and roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours in total.
Inflation happens in front of the passengers, with cold air first and then the burners until the envelope stands up. Aérocom and Balloon Revolution invite passengers to help. Everyone stands for the hour aloft, in baskets about 1.20 m high at Art Montgolfières, and France Montgolfières asks that passengers can crouch for about five minutes at landing. Art's pilots pick a field, give landing instructions a few metres up and may let the basket tip onto its side if the wind requires it.
Crews follow by 4x4 and drive passengers back to the meeting point. With France Montgolfières the return is by minibus, and its length depends on how far the balloon flew. Every operator ends with the traditional aeronauts' toast, with bubbles at Art Montgolfières and Balloon Revolution. Aérocom, France Montgolfières and Balloon Revolution give each passenger a flight certificate, and a Balloon Revolution ticket includes a free tasting visit at Caves Plou & Fils, open seven days a week.
April to October and the 20 km/h limit
The three operators that publish a season all fly from April to October. France Montgolfières lists 4 April to 25 October 2026 and 1 April to 31 October 2027. Aérocom flies from early April to the end of October, and Art Montgolfières says it does not fly in winter. In season Art flies daily when the weather is good, and it says morning light is whiter and often brings wildlife into view, while evening light turns pinker.
France Montgolfières cancels when the wind passes 20 km/h and notes that the wind aloft can differ from the wind on the ground. It also needs good visibility, no rain and an outside temperature that is not too high. Its calls come the day before or on the day, and rarely at the take-off field when the weather turns without warning. Aérocom says its pilot can change the site or cancel right up to take-off.
Aérocom Montgolfière prices by party size: EUR 209 for one adult, EUR 199 each for two or three and EUR 189 each for four or more. Children aged 6 to 13 pay EUR 159. Its tickets work any day, including weekends and public holidays, and its baskets hold up to 18. Art Montgolfières (EUR 197), France Montgolfières (EUR 199) and Balloon Revolution (EUR 195) all sell a cheaper weekday ticket, with any-day tickets at EUR 223, EUR 249 and EUR 199 respectively.
The weekday tickets carry limits. Art's excludes public holidays and the bridge days around them, France Montgolfières' excludes public holidays, and Balloon Revolution's covers Monday to Friday mornings only. Art averages about ten passengers per basket, France Montgolfières lists 1 to 12 on its Chenonceaux flight, and Balloon Revolution flies baskets of 2 to 12. Aérocom also sells a shared flight capped at 8 passengers from EUR 240. All four take children from age 6, and none publishes a weight limit.
Private baskets start at EUR 789 on weekdays with Art Montgolfières, EUR 799 with Aérocom, EUR 899 with Balloon Revolution and EUR 1,800 with France Montgolfières. None says how many passengers its starting price covers. Balloon Revolution's VIP flight adds 4x4 pickup within 15 km of Amboise. Art, Aérocom and France Montgolfières do not refund tickets but reschedule weather cancellations within a two-year validity, which Aérocom extends by a year for EUR 50. Balloon Revolution offers a new date or a refund at EUR 20 per ticket, and gift tickets cannot be refunded.
Before you book
France Montgolfières suggests long sleeves and trousers, closed walking shoes, a light windbreaker and something on your head against the heat of the burner.
With Art Montgolfières, phone from 3 pm the day before (02 54 32 08 11) to check that your flight is still on.
At Art Montgolfières, passengers under 16 fly with an adult, and a parental authorization is needed if the parents are not there.
The 2026 season is ending: France Montgolfières stops flying on 25 October 2026 and starts again on 1 April 2027.
Getting there. Amboise lies on the Loire 27 km (17 mi) east of Tours, and its station on the north bank has trains to Tours, Blois and Orléans. Chenonceau is about 18 km (11 mi) from Amboise.
