Bolero, Vindemia and the San Jacinto Mountains
Grape Escape starts at Bolero Winery, 41150 Via Europa, just off Rancho California Road. California Dreamin' meets at Vindemia Winery, a private vineyard, and drives passengers to the launch in its own vans, then back again after the flight. Both are in the wine country east of Temecula's city limits.
Grape Escape's pilots point out Lake Skinner, Old Town Temecula and the San Jacinto Mountains, along with wineries, citrus groves and estate homes. California Dreamin' describes vineyards and low hills at first light and a climb to about 1,500 feet, and says balloons cover 3 to 7 miles, depending on how fast the wind is. Grape Escape gives a wider range, from treetop height up to 3,000 feet.
Inflator fans, ground crews and La Scappatella champagne
Grape Escape's check-in moves with sunrise, from 5:30 am in summer to 6:30 am in winter, and the exact time comes with your confirmation. Its crew photographs passengers in the basket before takeoff. An inflator fan fills the seven-story envelope with cool air before the burners heat it, and guests can help with the setup or watch. A ground crew follows by road and, after landing, packs the balloon and drives everyone back to Bolero.
Grape Escape's shared flight page lists 60 to 75 minutes in the air and about three hours in all. Its FAQ says about an hour aloft and 2.5 to 3 hours from start to finish. Back at Bolero, passengers toast with the company's private-label La Scappatella champagne and receive a souvenir flight certificate. California Dreamin' says to plan on 3 to 3.5 hours, with roughly an hour aloft, a sparkling wine or cider toast after the flight and digital photos from the crew.
Spring marine layer and fall Santa Ana winds
Grape Escape flies once a day at sunrise, year-round, and California Dreamin' also goes up at sunrise, when it says the valley air is coolest and calmest. It adds that breezes build and turn less predictable as the day warms. Grape Escape carries passengers only in breezes up to 6 mph and calls 3 to 6 mph ideal. California Dreamin' says it moved here from Del Mar because conditions are better through the year.
A morning marine layer often forms over Temecula in May and June, July to September is hot and dry, and strong, dry Santa Ana winds blow from the northeast from late fall into winter. Neither company charges for a weather cancellation; California Dreamin' says it can usually fly the next day and suggests leaving a spare day or two. The 2025 Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival ran June 20 to 22 at Lake Skinner Recreation Area, with balloon glows at sunset on Friday and Saturday.
Fees-included fares, weekday rates and the 4-foot rule
Grape Escape prices its shared flight at $179 to $249 per person with all fees included, and its shared flights carry 8 to 16 passengers. It sets no age limit, but riders must stand at least 4 feet tall, be healthy and be able to stay on their feet for the whole flight. A refund, less an 8% fee, is available until 24 hours before check-in; after that, changes and no-shows are not refunded. Private flights for two cost $999 to $2,099 and need 48 hours' notice to cancel.
California Dreamin', which dates its Temecula operation to 1985, charges $208 on weekdays and $228 on weekends, with van transport to the launch and digital photos included. Its balloons range from six to eight seats up to 14, in partitioned European-style baskets, and it caps passenger weight at 300 lbs. Private flights start at $1,450 for one or two people and run to $4,500 for 14 or 15.
Before you book
Grape Escape does not allow shorts, open-toed shoes or high heels; wear casual active clothes and closed sport shoes, and bring a sweater or jacket.
California Dreamin' asks passengers over six feet tall, or bald, to wear a hat or cap because the burners radiate heat.
Leave a spare day or two after your booked flight; California Dreamin' says weather cancellations can usually fly the following day.
Backpacks, purses, heavy coats, drones and large camera rigs stay on the ground with California Dreamin'; a phone or small camera is fine.
